Project Details

Art Works! Sangai Khelaun is a program designed to bring art education to marginalised communities. It is especially aimed at communities whose language and cultural heritage are very different from the mainstream cultures reinforced in schools. Srijanalaya and Shiksya Foundation Nepal believe that there is a need to create a system of learning that places the children’s culture and personal interests at the center of the learning process. This is the foundation of ArtWorks! Sangai Khelaun. The program, established in 2015 has now gone to five locations:  Ghyachchok, Gatlang, Gamgadi, Pithauli.

From 29th October - 3rd November, 2017, the Srijanalaya team travelled to Bitijor, Sindhuli to carry out art education workshops in Shree Bal Madhyamik Vidhayalaya, Sulibhanjyang. A total of 230 students and 15 teachers participated in the workshops. The art workshops, specially designed by guest artists and art educators, allowed children to explore various art mediums, such as movement, visual arts, theatre, music, writing, et al. In the process, an extra emphasis was made into integrating local culture to the workshops. For example, in the creative movement workshop, local stories were collected and told through movement, successfully bringing the students’ local culture as well as the art of creative movement together. The workshops were divided over 4 days and culminated with a performance by the students.
