An online exhibition acknowledging women’s labor, knowledge, leadership and everyday resistance – Dalit, Indigenous, Madheshi, and Muslim women’s stories of change. This project is part of UN Women’s “Hamro Sahakarya: Our Collective Action – The Storytelling Initiative”, a collaborative project with the Government of Finland, in four provinces of Nepal – Sudurpaschim, Karnali, Madhesh, and Bagmati.

Nestled in the far-western hills, Doti carries an ancient heritage as the former seat of the Doteli kingdom. Despite its historical prominence, the district faces geographical isolation and economic marginalization, particularly affecting women and Dalit communities who navigate both traditional caste hierarchies and limited access to resources.
डोटी सुदूरपश्चिमी पहाडी क्षेत्रका डोटेली राज्यको पूर्व राजधानीको रूपमा प्राचीन विरासत बोकेको छ। यस जिल्लाका ऐतिहासिक महत्व भएतापनि, भौगोलिक अलगाव र आर्थिक पिछडापनको सामना गरिरहेको छ, जसले विशेष गरी महिलाहरू र दलित समुदायलाई असर पुर्याउँछ, जो परम्परागत जातीय व्यवस्थाहरू र सीमित स्रोत साधनको पहुँचबीच जीवनयापन गर्छन्।

कैलाली
Stretching across the fertile Terai plains of far-western Nepal, Kailali is marked by cultural diversity, including significant Tharu indigenous populations. Women and excluded groups here face challenges related to land rights, representation, and the lasting impacts of the historical Kamaiya bonded labor system that predominantly affected Tharu communities.
सुदूरपश्चिम नेपालको उर्बर तराई मैदानमा फैलिएको कैलाली सांस्कृतिक विविधताले चिनिन्छ, जसमा महत्वपूर्ण थारु आदिवासी जनसंख्या पनि समावेश छ । यहाँका महिलाहरू र बहिष्कृत समूहहरूले भूमिसम्बन्धी अधिकार, प्रतिनिधित्व, र ऐतिहासिक कमैया दासप्रथा प्रणालीका लामो समयसम्म रहने प्रभावसहितका चुनौतीहरूको सामना गर्दैछन्, जसले मुख्य रूपमा थारु समुदायहरूलाई प्रभावित गर्यो।

This mid-western district bridges hill and Terai landscapes, serving as a regional hub while hosting diverse ethnic communities. Women and excluded groups, including from indigenous and Dalit communities, contend with economic disparities and limited political voice despite the district’s administrative importance.
यो मध्यम-पश्चिमी जिल्ला पहाड र तराईको क्षेत्रलाई जोड्छ । क्षेत्रीय केन्द्रकाे जिमेवारि लिदै विभिन्न जातीय समुदायहरूको उपस्थितिलाई समेट्छ। जिल्ला र प्रदेश प्रशासनिक दृष्टिले महत्वपूर्ण भएतापनि, महिला र बहिष्कृत समूहहरू, जसमा आदिवासी र दलित समुदायहरू पनि समावेश छन्, आर्थिक असमानता र सीमित राजनीतिक आवाजको सामना गर्छन्।

काभ्रे
Located in the hills east of Kathmandu Valley, Kavre experienced significant impacts from the 2015 earthquakes. Women, particularly from Tamang and other indigenous communities as well as Dalit communities, continue rebuilding lives while navigating traditional gender roles and seeking economic opportunities beyond subsistence agriculture.

सर्लाही
This central Terai district borders India and hosts communities including Madhesi, Muslim, and Dalit populations. Women and marginalized groups here face intersecting challenges of caste discrimination, religious minority status, and gender-based barriers in a region historically underrepresented in national narratives.
यो मध्यम तराईको जिल्ला भारतसँग सीमा जोडिएको छ र यहाँ मधेसी, मुस्लिम, दलित समुदायहरू बसोबास गर्दछन्। यहाँकी महिलाहरू र बहुलक्षित समूहहरूले जातीय भेदभाव, धार्मिक अल्पसंख्यकको स्थिति, र लिङ्ग आधारित अवरोधजस्ता अन्तरसङ्गठनात्मक चुनौतीहरूको सामना गर्छन्, जुन क्षेत्र ऐतिहासिक रूपमा राष्ट्रिय कथनहरूमा कम प्रतिनिधित्व भएको छ।

In this project, 15 artists from Nepal, mostly women, travelled to five districts across four provinces: Doti and Kailali in Sudurpashchim, Surkhet in Karnali, Kavre in Bagmati, and Sarlahi in Madhesh. The artworks and stories reveal the interconnectedness of gender, labour, identity, and social change.

Tasked to write only 10 stories of 10 women when we spoke to over 100 women from March-June of 2024, we leaned on fiction as a method to democratise the selection and crafting of stories.
२०८० फागुनदेखि २०८१ असारसम्ममा सयभन्दा बढी महिलासँग कुराकानी भएता पनि हामीले केवल १० जना महिलाका १० वटामात्र कथा लेख्नुपर्ने थियो । कथाहरू छान्ने र बुन्ने प्रक्रियालाई लोकतान्त्रिक बनाउन हामीले आख्यानको सहारा लियौँ ।
